Situation & History
Château Haura is an old Estate. It is located on one of the best soil of the village of Illats, in the Graves region. In 2002, its owner, Bernard Leppert came to a farm rent agreement with Denis Dubourdieu. The old vineyard planted in great majority with white vine is re-planted essentially with red vine.
The soil of Château Haura exemplifies best the Graves Appellation. It is composed of gravelly rumps with a graveled composed of two layers. The upper layer is soft, about 1m deep and largely colonized by roots whereas the lower part is made of compact gravel. This type of soil having a low the water holding capacity, regularly generate a water stress throughout the summer, favorable to the good maturation of the grape.
12,1 ha 53 % Cabernet Sauvignon - 47 % Merlot
54 % Cabernet Sauvignon - 46 % Merlot
Wine making and ageing
Ripened harvest is handpicked and undergoes 20 to 25 days maceration at moderate temperature (25°C to 30°C). Ageing is performed in oak barrels a third of which is new, for 12 months.
Le Haura Rouge has the style of a great classic Bordeaux from the left bank in which the fresh tannins and smokiness of Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel combined with the silkiness of Merlot are expressed.
